Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) can expedite the healing of certain types of chronic, non-healing wounds, such as diabetic wounds, as well as reduce patient suffering, disability and prevent unnecessary hospitalizations and amputations.
HBOT involves administering 100% oxygen to patients in a specially constructed chamber, as shown in this photo:
The atmospheric pressure is increased two to three times normal for 90 minutes per session.
This has the effect of:
This oxygen saturation lasts for up to two hours after completion of the treatment in the chamber. Treatment is repeated daily, for an average of thirty times.
– A success rate of 75 to 90% –
Initial studies have shown that Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy combined with proper wound care, adequate nutrition and control of the diabetes have resulted in a 75 to 90% success rate in healing chronic non-healing wounds, avoiding amputation.
